Benefits of Blogging
So what are the benefits of blogging? The main benefit is blogging is good for your business. It’s impossible to list all of the benefits of blogging for your business here but the top five are:
- Expert status
- Books business or sells products
- Builds your list
- Positions you as a source for information
Basic Blogging Skills
Blogging does require a few skills but these skills are pretty easy to master. The GREAT news is that you already have one of the skills, which is that you are an expert in your industry.
The other skill is being able to translate your expertise into writing so you have to be able to write in a way that is attractive + engaging to the clients that you are trying to attract.
You don’t have to be an expert or professional writer to master the power of blogging for your business. You have to learn exactly how to write + format a blog post so you can write posts that attract more + more of the clients you want to work with.
The other skill you have to acquire is marketing or promoting the blog posts you write to get the posts in front of the right clients where they are hanging out online.
Essential Blogging Tools
You don’t need a lot to start a blog for your wedding business but having some essential blogging tools can start you off on the right foot. For example, if you don’t already have a domain, blogging platform + a host for your blog, then you’re going to have to choose one.
Another useful tool is a theme for your blog. Most professionals have their blog as part of their website (which is smart) so choosing a theme is not only about the layout of your blog but it is also about the design of your website.
Essential Blogging Techniques
Knowing some basic blogging techniques can help you increase the amount of traffic you’re attracting to your site.
One technique that can come in handy is knowing the basic outline of what a blog post should include.
Another technique worth mastering is writing the content for the blog post so you fill in all of the important information in the outline.
Search engine optimization (affectionately known as SEO) is another technique you’re going to want to master. It combines your writing + marketing skills to get your posts ranked in search engines like Google that are going to drive traffic to your blog.
Types of Blog Posts
You have a lot of options when it comes to choosing the type of blog posts you write. Here’s a shortlist of the various types of posts you can write:
1. How-to Posts
People LOVE it when you tell them how to do something. They eat it up with a silver spoon.
2. List Posts
Give ’em a list of things to do, resources, or what-ev. People seem to love lists (as much as I do). Maybe (like me), they get satisfaction from checking an item off their to-do list.
3. Behind-the-Scenes Post
People really seem to get into “the how” of how things get done. By that, I mean they want a behind-the-scenes look at how you do your job.
4. Answer a Question(s)/ Popular Topic
Head on over to your favorite Facebook groups. You know, the ones where pools of your ideal clients are just swimming around. Scroll through the posts + see what they are talking about or the question that keeps popping up over + over again. Write a post answering the question on the hot topic.
If you’re not a part of any of these types of Facbook groups, head to forums on sites catering to your industry to find out the hot topics.
5. Image Only (or at Least Mostly)
Post a picture + then throw in just a few lines of text to explain. For example, if you have a mom blog, take a picture of “what’s in your bag.” This is an easy post that doesn’t take much time + is useful to the wedding couples checking out your blog.
Interview another pro you know or work with as a feature on your blog. EVEN BETTER, interview clients! This is a great way to share information with other clients. HINT: These types of posts can drive major traffic to your blog.
7. Q + A Post
List out the top questions clients have. Provide them with the answers. You can grab the questions from a survey of your readers, email subscribers, or from scouring social media. You probably already have a list of frequently asked questions floating around in your head.
8. Blog Post Roundup
Roundup a list of your most popular blog posts or industry-related blog posts. Share the list of posts + links on your blog. Just like David Letterman used to have a Top 10 every night on his show, you can have a Top 10 in posts for the week, month, year or what-ev.
9. Guest Post
Publish another pro’s fabulous blog post on your blog. Great because you don’t have to write a post + a great way to drive traffic to your blog BECAUSE the writer usually helps you promote the post. This is a potential way to attract new clients that you might not otherwise have an opportunity to reach.
10. A List of Faves
Compile a list of your favorite things. Maybe it’s a general list or super specific to a topic that your clients can relate. Pretty much any list is game on.
